Attendance Form

Virginia State Law

Virginia State law requires that each student who is absent from school must be reported each time by a responsible person. An excused absence is one for which parents/guardians have prior knowledge, consent, and a legitimate reason. Legitimate reasons include: illness of the student, death in the family, and observance of a religious holiday. Absences for family and student vacations are unexcused. According to School Board Regulation 2234, after the fifth unexcused absence the school is to refer the student to the attendance officer.

Excused Absence and Tardy

This includes illness of the student, death in the family, doctor or dentist appointment, and observance of a religious holiday.

Unexcused Absence and Tardy

This includes family trips, child care situations, oversleeping, non-school related activity, traffic, or missed bus.

Family Trips

We encourage family trips during scheduled school vacations.  We strongly discourage such trips during the school year because these extended absences interrupt sequential learning in many subject areas.  We must withdraw any student who is absent from school for 15 days or more from our enrollment.  Upon the student’s return, a parent must again officially enroll him or her.

Release of Students during the Day

Parents should send a written request to the teacher when your child must leave early.  Parents must report to the office to pick up and sign out their child.  We will not release any child to any adult other than the parent/guardian or persons listed on the emergency care form without a written request signed by a parent and students are not allowed to walk home alone midday. Students may be released to either parent unless prohibited by a court order. If restricted custody has been legally established, a parent must furnish a copy of the custody order to be kept on file in the school office.
