Dear Olde Creek Parents and Families,

In Fairfax County, schools, county agencies and families are working together to create an environment where children and youth can safely learn, work, and play. Similar to our message containing information about the 13 Reasons Why NETFLIX program and the Blue Whale Challenge, we are sending this communication to alert you to a recent rise in new games and social media challenges that encourage young people to participate in harmful behavior.

One example of this is a potentially harmful game called the “Momo Challenge" that has reportedly been posted on different social media platforms to include WhatsApp and assigns players a series of progressively more intense tasks, to include self-harm. It is important to note that the Momo Challenge is a hoax that has received a significant amount of media attention.

This hoax has been seen across the United States in recent months, targeting primarily elementary aged children. Vigilant parents and guardians in Fairfax County have also reported seeing information about the Momo Challenge or similar games on their children's phones and have alerted school authorities.
Please talk to your child about this type of internet hoax, and check his or her phone or other device for signs of an app or communications with anyone telling them to do specific tasks. This provides an excellent opportunity to remind your child of best practices for internet safety and digital citizenship:

• Remind your child information shared on social media is not always true and how quickly misinformation can create a panic online.
• Children should never engage in conversations with strangers online.
• Be aware of the sites and apps your children are using and know their usernames and passwords.
• Turn off suggested autoplay on videos to stop children from viewing content they have not selected, and you have not approved.
• If appropriate, tell your children that Momo is not real and will not hurt them.
• Encourage open dialogue with them around any concerns.

FCPS has additional resources available on this website: https://www.fcps.edu/node/32086. If you have concerns about your child, please contact your school counselor. Please be aware that a number of mental health resources are available, including Fairfax County Public School resources: School Counseling Services at 571-423- 4420, School Psychology Services at 571-423-4250, and School Social Work Services at 571-423-4300 and Fairfax County resources: Crisis Link Hotline at 703-527-4077, Merrifield Emergency Services 703-573-5679 (available 24/7) or Entry and Referral during business hours at 703-383-8500. The Fairfax County Police Department non-emergency number is 703-691-2131.

More information about the Momo Challenge and other internet challenges or hoaxes is available at these links:
• An article from the Ohio Department of Education contains talking points to use when speaking with your child: http://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Other-Resources/News/Know-Momo-and-her-Deadly-Challenge-to-our-Youth

March 4, 2019

Olde Creek Parents and Guardians:

In cooperation with the Fairfax County Health Department, we are sending this health information letter to inform you that multiple cases of influenza-like illness have been reported across our school.  Children with influenza-like illness have cough and congestion, and may have fever, chills, sore throat, headache, body aches, and feeling tired (fatigue).  Illness may be caused by the influenza virus or by other types of viruses.

The Health Department recommends that you and your family members take the following steps to protect yourselves and others from influenza and other respiratory illnesses:

  • Vaccinate your child and yourself against influenza this year and every year. As long as influenza is circulating in our community it is not too late to get a vaccine.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Teach your children to wash their hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds.  Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself. If soap and water are not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers may be used.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and throw tissues in the trash after use.  If tissues are not available, cover coughs and sneezes with your upper sleeve.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.  Germs spread this way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with individuals who have influenza-like symptoms.
  • Monitor your child for signs of influenza-like illness.
  • Do not send any child experiencing influenza-like symptoms to school.  If your child comes to school with the symptoms described above, he or she may be sent home. Keep your child home and away from others until the child has been symptom free and without fever for at least 24 hours without the use of medication (i.e. he or she should not attend school, school functions, sporting or extracurricular activities, or leave the home except to seek medical care).
  • Consult with your child’s health care provider regarding possible use of medication that treats influenza if your child has a chronic medical condition, an illness that weakens their immunity, or who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy.

We encourage you to put this information into practice to help your child stay healthy and to prevent others from getting sick. If you have questions regarding this information, please contact your health care provider or the School Public Health Nurse, Kathleen Boyd at koboyd@fcps.edu.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Dear Olde Creek Families,

Fairfax County Public Schools will be conducting a survey to gather information about family engagement in our schools. Relationships are important to us, and your opinion is critical to help us support your engagement in your child’s education. Your feedback will also help us determine how well we are reaching the goals for Caring Culture we have set in our Strategic Plan. Survey translations will be made available, and the survey can be taken on electronic devices, including smartphones.

Survey administration is scheduled for March 24-April 12, 2019, and you will receive more information about how to take the survey in the near future.

Dear Olde Creek Parents and Families,

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is studying how school environments relate to discipline practices in the Division. As part of the study, you will receive a survey from FCPS’ Office of Research and Strategic Improvement.  A small number of classrooms will also participate in the study’s student survey. The surveys are designed to help FCPS understand your and your child’s thoughts about the school environment and how discipline is approached in their school.

Surveys to parents will be translated into multiple languages and come via eNotify. Student surveys will be administered at school. Participation is voluntary for you and your child, and all responses will be anonymous.

I encourage you to participate in this important survey to help FCPS understand what is working well and where we can improve.

Olde Creek is excited for our 2nd Annual Literacy Night at 6:00 on Thursday, February 7th.  Many families have registered for this night of fun and learning.  The event begins with a pizza dinner in the cafeteria, followed by a literacy presentation for parents by our Reading Specialist, Ms. Julie Wilson.  Students and parents will then have an opportunity to visit and participate in hands-on literacy activities such as  exploring online literacy opportunities, a story-walk in the OCES Library, an educational make-and-take, and, back by popular demand, our creative reading photo booth. We’re really looking forward to seeing our Olde Creek families at this celebration of reading! If you haven't a chance to return the form we sent home, please RSVP for the event by emailing Ms. Wilson (jmwilson1@fcps.edu). We hope to see you there!

Safety Drills at Olde Creek

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

At Olde Creek, our number one responsibility is to ensure the safety of our students and staff at all times. We continually work with county leaders to ensure coordinated responses to potential safety concerns and we practice emergency drills on a regular basis throughout the school year

Today, we conducted a lockdown drill. The purpose of a lockdown is to protect against intruders in the school building. Prior to today, teachers talked to our students to prepare them for our drill.

During a lockdown drill:

  • Students stay in place with a teacher or staff member.
  • Students and teachers remain in locked classrooms, unobservable from outside (lights-off, window blinds closed, door windows obscured with paper).
  • Students and staff members disregard fire alarms.
  • No one enters or exits the school, except public safety personnel.
  • Persons in trailers remain in locked trailers.

Our students did a great job today! We will have one more lockdown drill this school year.

Furloughed Government Employees

As many of you may be aware of, FCPS recognizes the impact that the government shutdown may have on some of our FCPS families. Not only has FCPS made the commitment that children with parents who are currently out of work due the government shutdown will not go unfed during the school day, but they have also held job fairs to offer furloughed employees the opportunity to substitute teach in our schools if they meet our division-wide hiring criteria.

If your family is being impacted and you find you may need support; and feel comfortable making us aware, please feel free to connect with either a member of our school counseling team or administrative team so that we can work to connect you with resources that may be able to assist you during this period of time.

Student School Climate Survey

This winter our school, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Education and the University of Virginia, is participating in a statewide student school climate survey. The purpose of this survey is to help schools assess their progress in establishing a positive school climate that promotes student learning.

The survey will be completed online using computers at school. The survey does not ask for your child’s name and all answers are anonymous (no one will know how your child answered the survey). Parents will not have access to their child’s survey answers. There is a copy of the survey available at school for your review and is available here.

The survey will ask questions such as how students feel about their school, how students get along with one another and their teachers, how students feel about school rules, their perceptions of their teachers’ willingness to help them, and how they feel about attending school. They will also be asked what kinds of bullying they may have observed at school and whether they have been bullied themselves.

The survey is voluntary and your child can decide not to participate. If you do not wish for your child to participate, please notify Assistant Principal Kenya Champ at kschamp@fcps.edu by January 9, 2019.

Your child will not receive any immediate benefit from participating in the survey, but the survey will help us to maintain a safe, inviting, and supportive learning environment for your child.

Thank you for your cooperation in this important study of school climate.
