At Olde Creek, we believe in strong partnerships between home and school. I want to remind our families that our door is always open. Whether you have a celebration to share, a question, or something you’d like to discuss, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We value your voices and are here to support your child’s success.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community. Stay warm, and we look forward to another great week ahead!

Breaking Down the Budget: Supporting Academic Growth and Algebra by Eighth Grade

Since the 2023-24 school year, FCPS has seen a 9.5% increase in eighth graders taking Algebra I or more advanced math and a 6.8% increase in fifth graders in advanced math.

Studies show that students who complete algebra in middle school have more opportunities to take advanced math and science courses in high school. This can open up new academic paths for students! Watch a video that shows why eighth grade algebra matters

School Counseling Week  Thank You To Our Counselors!

February 3-7 is National School Counseling Week, highlighting the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve academic success and planning for the future.

School counselors work with students in many ways, such as classroom lessons, group sessions, and individual counseling. We want to celebrate the important (and often behind-the-scenes) work they do each and every day toward supporting the learning that happens here at Olde Creek.

We are so fortunate at Olde Creek to have two fabulous counselors - Mr. Cameron Boster and Ms. Dina Berhan, who has been out on maternity leave but will return next week! We thank them for being such an important part of our Olde Creek family!

Proposed Budget Presented to School Board

The Fairfax County School Board discussed the FCPS Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Proposed Budget at their work session on February 4. They discussed details regarding student enrollment and investments in students requiring additional support, market comparison data for surrounding school divisions, and an update on progress toward achieving the Baldrige Award for Performance Excellence. Baldrige is a framework used to assess and improve organizational performance across various sectors, including education.

The School Board also held a public hearing on February 4, where they invited the community to share their feedback on the proposed budget.

On Tuesday, February 18, the Fairfax County executive will present the county’s Advertised Budget, and the School Board will hold a work session on FCPS’ FY 2026 Proposed Budget. View the Budget Development Calendar.

  • Breaking Down the Budget More than 85% of the budget is dedicated to instruction and reflects the needs of our community’s young people in response to the changing world around us. Budget priorities include providing competitive compensation for all employees, including a 7% salary increase for all staff.

Our families want their children in high-quality schools with the best teachers who provide rigorous academic experiences. FCPS must provide competitive compensation to attract and retain our outstanding educators, administrators, and other school-based and operational staff dedicated to the success of our students.

The proposed 7% salary increase would likely move FCPS to the highest starting salary for teachers with a master's degree among our neighboring counties and greatly improve our recruitment efforts amidst an ongoing teacher shortage.

Visit the Budget webpage for more information.

🫱🏽🫲🏼Friendly Reminder: FCPS Trust Policy Information For Families

As we navigate the months ahead, many families are experiencing anxiety and uncertainty due to the recent Presidential Election and ongoing discussions surrounding immigration policies.

In 2022, the School Board adopted the Trust Policy, reaffirming its commitment to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all students and their families. This policy aligns FCPS with Fairfax County’s Public Trust and Confidentiality Policy ensuring that students and families can access school division benefits and services without fear that their information will be disclosed to federal immigration officials.

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid presented the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Proposed Budget at the School Board meeting on Thursday, January 23. Watch a video of the presentation

As Dr. Reid noted in her January 24 letter to families, “The budget is fiscally responsible and invests in excellence — not just for FCPS, but for all of us in Fairfax County who want a strong community with successful young people, dedicated educators and support staff, and a thriving economy.”

The proposed budget reflects the needs of and FCPS’ commitments to Fairfax County students, families, and community members. It focuses on competitive compensation, including a 7.0% salary increase for all staff to recruit and retain our outstanding educators, administrators, and other school-based and operational staff dedicated to the success of our students; investing in students who require additional support; and continuing multiyear initiatives such as inclusive preschool and safety and security updates.

📈 Virginia’s Student Assessment Summary for Families

This month, families of students who took any Standards of Learning (SOL) test between school years 2015-16 and 2023-24 will receive a Student Assessment Summary Report. The report shows a student’s state percentile ranking for each test. This allows families to see how their child ranked compared to all Virginia students who took the same test that year.

Reports are available now in SIS ParentVUE Documents. We will distribute them to students whose families do not have ParentVUE access. Learn how to access ParentVUE

The report is intended to help families reflect on how their child performed across all tested subjects over the years. Our staff members are committed to working with families to help every student reach their highest potential. Learn more about student assessments in FCPS.

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

Winter weather is here! As a reminder, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy time outdoors. Schools monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside for activities like recess or physical education.

Olde Creek News Admin Avenue

Dear Olde Creek Community,

What a fantastic (and chilly) first (and only) full week of school this month! Although the cold weather and persistent snow on the ground kept us indoors for recess, it didn’t cool off the excitement for learning in our classrooms. It has been wonderful to see our Bears diving into their work with enthusiasm and curiosity.

A quick reminder: there will be no school on Monday, January 20, as we observe Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday and Inauguration Day. This is a great opportunity to reflect on the values of leadership, equality, and service to others.

We also have some exciting events coming up that you won’t want to miss! Be sure to keep an eye on the Upcoming Dates section above and mark your calendars so you can stay connected and celebrate all the great things happening at Olde Creek.

Thank you for your continued support of our amazing school community. Stay warm, and we’ll see you next week!

Warm regards,
Courtney Korb, Principal

Maureen Boland, Interim Assistant Principal

Stephanie Kaminsky, Assistant Principal

Upcoming Dates

December 23-January: Winter Break
January 28: Save the Date: Family Engagement Night - 5:30 PM

Olde Creek News Admin Avenue

Dear Olde Creek Families,

As we approach the final days of 2024, I want to take a moment to reflect on all we have accomplished together this year and share a few important updates as we head into winter break.

First, I want to express my deepest gratitude for our incredible school community—students, staff, and families—who make Olde Creek a truly special place. The enthusiasm, collaboration, and commitment to learning and kindness that fill our hallways every day are inspiring.

This week marks a bittersweet moment for our school, as we say goodbye to Mrs. Alison Butler, our beloved assistant principal. Mrs. Butler has been an integral part of our school family, and her leadership, compassion, and dedication to our students will be dearly missed. We are celebrating her with warmth, laughter, and fond memories as she transitions to her next chapter.

I am pleased to share that our interim assistant principal will be Mrs. Maureen Boland, who is no stranger to Olde Creek. Mrs. Boland is a retired FCPS principal and a member of the Olde Creek community. Her wealth of experience will make her the perfect fit to help us maintain continuity and support during this transition. We are thrilled to welcome her to this role and know she will provide exceptional leadership while we work to hire a permanent assistant principal.

As we wrap up 2024, I want to wish each of you a joyful holiday season and a restful winter break. I hope this time brings you the chance to relax, recharge, and enjoy special moments with loved ones.

Thank you for your continued support of our school. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on January 6th, ready for new opportunities, growth, and learning in 2025!

Warm regards,
Courtney

Celebrating 14 amazing years with Mrs. Butler at Olde Creek ES! Her dedication, heart, and humor have left an unforgettable mark on our school. We will miss her dearly—once a Bear, always a Bear! 💙🐻 #ThankYouMrsButler

Olde Creek News Admin Avenue

Dear Olde Creek Families,

As the chilly winds swept through our community this week, we were warmed by the kindness and togetherness of our school family. Our annual Thanksgiving Luncheon was a heartwarming event, and we were so grateful to see so many families join us.

A big shout-out to our incredible food service and custodial staff, as well as our dedicated volunteers, who worked to make the luncheon a success! Your efforts didn’t go unnoticed!

We’re thankful for the opportunity to educate and inspire our students, and we’re even more grateful for the supportive community that surrounds us.

As a reminder, we only have two school days next week. We’re excited to celebrate with a Pajama Day on Tuesday, November 26th.

Wishing you a warm and cozy Thanksgiving filled with gratitude and joy!

With Gratitude,

Courtney Korb
Alison Butler
Stephanie Kaminsky

Calendar Reminder

Thanksgiving

Schools and offices will be closed November 27-29. Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving! Classes will resume on Monday, December 2. Learn more about the first Thanksgiving.

See the complete school year calendar.

Accessing Family Life Education Materials (FLE)

4th-6th grade classes will be participating in Family Life Education (FLE) lessons beginning in December. (Be on the look out for communication from teachers regarding this shortly).

For your convenience, the lessons and materials are available for families to view at your own pace on the All Parents/Guardians: Olde Creek Elementary School Schoology Course. Detailed instructions on how to access these materials can be found liked here.

Additionally, the Woodson Pyramid will be hosting a Parent Preview Night for FLE on Wednesday, December 4th from 5:30-6:00PM. This event provides an opportunity to ask questions and receive assistance in accessing the materials virtually.

Join us using this link: https://myfcpsk12.zoom.us/j/98212425017?pwd=RMP78xMm7oJohNebVYWw54gwOiYlfE.1

We invite you also to learn more about Fairfax County's elementary FLE program on the FCPS website.

Please reach out to Alison Butler ([email protected]) with any questions

Lost & Found Items Will Be Donated 12/13

All jackets, sweatshirts, lunchboxes, etc., that are left at school at 3:30PM on Friday, December 13th, will be bagged up and donated.

If you are missing something, please check the lost and found by the end of the school day on December 13th.

Please consider putting your child's name or initials on the label inside the jacket. It greatly increases the chances that we can re-unite your child with their belongings

Help us Eliminate Food Waste

The Olde Creek Green Team is starting a food sharing program to reduce waste and food insecurity.

Before we get this program started, we are looking for a donated refrigerator to collect unwanted food, or financial donations toward the purchase of new refrigerator.

If this is something you would are interested in helping with, please reach out to Mrs. Sharon Smith or Ms. Julie Park, our Green Team advisors.

A Note from the Clinic

This is the time of year when we expect to see an increase in the number of respiratory illnesses in our community, including coughs, colds, sore throats, respiratory syncytial virus and influenza. This fall, we are also seeing a rise in pediatric pneumonia. If your child has a fever, a cough that is worsening or you have concerns that their “common cold” is something more, please take them to a medical provider for evaluation and diagnosis.

We are also seeing an increase in gastrointestinal viruses. Vomiting and diarrhea can lead to dehydration, which can be dangerous. It is important to stay hydrated when ill. GI viruses are very contagious, so it is important to follow these tips.

To help prevent the spread of illnesses:

  • Look for signs of illness in your child.
  • Keep children home when they are ill to prevent the illness from spreading to others. If your child has a fever, they should remain home until the fever has been gone for 24 hours (without fever-reducing medications) and they feel well enough to attend a full day of school.
  • Keep children home when they are experiencing vomiting or diarrhea. They may return to school 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting and/or Diarrhea
  • Teach your child how to stop the spread of illness by washing their hands often, covering their mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. For Gastrointestinal illnesses, washing hands with soap and water is the best practice, not hand sanitizer.
  • Stay up-to-date on immunizations.

FCPS News Boundary Review Community Meetings Start This Month

As a reminder, FCPS has started the process of reviewing school boundaries across the division. This important work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is vital to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will be hosting a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

Please visit FCPS’ website for meeting dates, locations, and other information. Sign up for the School Boundary Review newsletter for updates.

Parents/caregivers, school staff, and students over the age of 14 are invited to attend an interactive event celebrating the individualized education program (IEP) process. Tutoring Resources for Families

Is your family looking for resources to help support your child’s academic success? FCPS’ Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of district employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to be hired as a tutor by parents. FRC maintains this list, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource.

FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence, reminds us of our commitment to supporting each and every student and helping them meet or exceed high academic standards.
