A huge thank you goes out to everyone who participated in our Laps for Learning Fun Run on Saturday. It was a wonderful event and it was amazing to see the Olde Creek community come together. We are extremely grateful to the Olde Creek PTA for supporting this event and for all of parents who volunteered their time to help make it a reality. We also appreciate all of the generous food and drink donations that helped our runners recharge at the end of the event. Our school is fortunate to reside in such a warm, caring, and friendly community and that was on full display on Saturday.

Safety Drills at Olde Creek

Today, we conducted our second lockdown drill of the school year and we will have a minimum of two more. Additionally, we have already conducted four fire drills this year. During the first month of the school year, fire drills will be conducted on a weekly basis and for the remainder of the year they will happen once a month. We will also conduct tornado drills and bus evacuation drills throughout the year. The purpose of a lockdown is to protect against intruders in the school building. Prior to today, teachers talked to our students about the purpose and practiced the procedures to prepare them for our drill. Our students and staff did a great job today! We are very proud of them.

Expertise Survey

At Olde Creek, one of our goals we have is for the educational opportunities that we provide for the students to be authentically connected to the world around us. We aspire to prepare our students to be able to positively impact the world they will enter in the future. One of the instructional delivery methods we use to help foster these real-world connections is an approach called Project-Based Learning (PBL). Our staff has been working diligently in the past year to develop their own capacity to provide these types of engaging learning opportunities. In many of our PBLs, we often try to connect with someone outside of our school who has expertise in the area our students are learning about.

This is where all of you can help us! We are looking for Olde Creek parents and family members who may be interested in speaking with some of our students about their area of expertise. We are looking for engineers, carpenters, authors, entrepreneurs, and much more. If you are interested in speaking with our students about your profession or passion, please complete the survey below. We will share the results with our staff and if our students are completing a project or assignment that aligns with your area of expertise, we will be in touch Thank you for being willing to share your gifts and skills with our school!

Safety Drills at Olde Creek

Safety Drills at Olde Creek

At Olde Creek, our number one responsibility is to ensure the safety of our students and staff at all times. We continually work with county leaders to ensure coordinated responses to potential safety concerns and we practice emergency drills on a regular basis throughout the school year.

Today, we conducted our first lockdown drill of the school year and we will have a minimum of three more. Additionally, we have already conducted two fire drills this year.

During a lockdown drill:

  • Students stay in place with a teacher or staff member.
  • Students and teachers remain in locked classrooms, unobservable from outside (lights off, window blinds closed, door windows obscured with paper).
  • Students and staff members disregard fire alarms and school-wide announcemnts.
  • No one enters or exits the school, except public safety personnel.

Our students and staff did a great job today! We are very proud of them.

Family Life Education Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms will be included in your child’s back-to-school/orientation packets and are available online for Elementary (K-6) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/elementary-family-life-education , Middle School (7-8) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/middle-school-academics-7-8/family-life-education-fle, and High School (9-12) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/high-school-academics-9-12/family-life-education-fle.  Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) Parent View https://fcps.blackboard.com/.  Account information is available at your local school or online at http://www.fcps.edu/is/instructionaltechnology/247help/parents.shtml.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the Fairfax County Regional Library in the City of Fairfax (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school on the evening of November 8 at 5:00 PM. Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by contacting Elizabeth Payne, Health and Physical Education Coordinator at etpayne@fcps.edu.

Olde Creek Weekly Update - August 27

GovDelivery 1 month 3 weeks ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Dear Olde Creek Families and Students,

We hope that you have enjoyed a relaxing and fun summer break, and that you are excited about returning to school.  Olde Creek is ready to welcome you for the 2018 – 2019 school year!  The entire staff has been working hard all summer to prepare for an amazing year at Olde Creek ES. All we need now is you!  Below is some important and helpful information as we start the year tomorrow together as a school community.

School will begin on Tuesday, August 28.  School hours are 8:30 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. Monday – Friday. The FCPS school bus transportation system is safe and reliable.  If you have bus service, we strongly encourage you to have your child ride the bus.  If you drive your child to school, please arrive no earlier than 8:15 a.m. and use the Kiss-n-Ride lane.  Please do not pull into the bus lane.  Kiss-n-Ride can be congested during the first few weeks of the school year, so please allow an adequate amount of time for arrival. For safety reasons, parents and students are not permitted to cross through the bus lane, and staff members will be present to remind parents and students of this policy. All students need to be in their classrooms by 8:30 AM or they will be marked as Tardy.

Back-to-School Night is on Wednesday, September 5th from 6:45 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.  At this event, teachers will provide information about their individual classrooms, grade-level curriculum, and programs and resources available to our students and families.  This night is just for parents.  Please arrange for child care for your children.  The school doors will open at 6:30 and the classroom programs will begin at 6:45 p.m.

There are several ways that our school will be communicating with our families. Be sure to check our website (https://oldecreekes.fcps.edu/) frequently. This will have important information, as well as access to our School Calendar and our Twitter feed. An Olde Creek Weekly Update digital newsletter will be emailed regularly with important information and upcoming events. Please be sure that we have your correct email address on file so that you may receive this communication. Finally, our Friday Folder system will continue to be in place which will allow important classroom and school information to go home each week.

During the first two weeks of the school year, nearly all of our students will complete a variety of beginning of the year assessments in multiple curriculum areas. These assessments will provide our teaching staff with important information about each student so we can deliver the right type of instruction for them to be successful. Please feel free to reach out to your student’s teacher if you have any specific questions.

We are excited for a great first day of school tomorrow. There will be lots of smiling Olde Creek staff members ready to welcome your students to a new school year.  At the beginning of last week, you were sent a letter with the name of your child’s teacher and room number for the 2018 – 2019 school year. On the first day of school, your child will report directly to his or her classroom, and you are welcome to join them.  Staff members will also be available to help your child find their classroom throughout the first few weeks of the school year.  We ask that, after the first day of school, if you drive or walk with your child to school, that you say your goodbyes in front of the building.

We look forward to a great year together as we collaborate with students, families, and community members to create a positive place for our students to learn and grow.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal

Olde Creek Families…

We hope that all of you are having a wonderful summer. We can’t wait to hear about all of the exciting adventures our students went on when they return in a few weeks. As we head into the 2018-2019 school year we are looking forward to continuing our work that is aligned with the Portrait of a Graduate. We will also be focusing on academic conversations and learning targets throughout all curriculum areas. Over the course of the year, we hope that you will be hearing about all three of these topics from your students.

Building strong relationships with our parent community continues to be the foundation of the work that we do. We value parent involvement and will continue to work together to provide the very best for each child. We encourage families to volunteer in the school and get involved with the Olde Creek PTA, and participate in our community events. Over the course of the year, we will be sending out specific information about our many events and programs. You can also use our website to stay connected to the many great things happening at our school and we encourage you to follow us on Twitter @OldeCreekES

The remainder of this message includes important dates and information that is related to the beginning of the school year. Feel free to call or email the school if you have any questions or if there is anything we can do to help.

We can’t wait to see everyone in a few weeks! Have a great finish to your summer.
